Australian wine successfully rode the varietal brand, 'Shiraz', to export success with a slew of powerful dry red wines throughout the 1990s. However the grape's spiritual home is around the village of Tain, in France's northern Rhône valley, just south of Lyon. Here, steep slopes of meagre granite and schist, jagged and abrupt, rise from the Rhône river. They are planted most dominantly with Shiraz, or Syrah, as it is known in those parts.
