About this wine
Cape Mentelle Grey Label Chardonnay Margaret River
Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the grapes for the Cape Mentelle Grey Label Chardonnay are sourced from select estate vineyards in Margaret River, where the maritime climate and diverse soils create optimal conditions for Chardonnay. In the blend, Chapman Brook vineyard fruit provides generosity and weight while the Crossroads vineyard brings another layer of refinement and structure to the wine.
Fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, with a careful blending process to achieve the desired balance of flavours. The wine then undergoes a period of maturation on lees, enhancing its texture and contributing to the overall refinement. The result is a Chardonnay that reflects the distinct characteristics of its origin while showcasing the artistry of the winemaking team.

A light and fragrant chardonnay, but one with an intriguing complexity that emerges almost immediately. Light lemon meringue with a little grapefruit and roasted almond break out on the nose. The palate is precise and fine with a delicacy that belies the intensity driving through to a sustained finish. Has a chalky acid and slightly savoury finish.

Margaret River specialises in Chardonnays with sunny dispositions that beautifully reflect the region’s Mediterranean climate. Cape Mentelle is no different, and in 2022 we see excellent vintage conditions contributing to an aromatic, warm and textural Chardonnay and, yes, one that is very much sunny in disposition. Lime peel, citrus, white peach, toast and almond meal aromas. Speaks of summer stone fruits, nougat and lifted citrus, well defined and assisted in length and impact by a chalky, dry acidity. Almost understated – almost – except for that middle palate richness and texture. Good tension throughout and length.

As with the Heritage, this was fully barrel fermented, before maturing in barrel for another ten months, with 35% new. This wine then received a further two months on lees in tank before bottling. A fine regional Chardonnay, a very pale lemon hue, this is fresh, well-structured and offering good energy. There are gentle spice notes, hints of nutmeg, grapefruits, oatmeal, stonefruit, lemongrass and ginger. Finely balanced, layered, with bright acidity and impressive length, it provides extremely attractive drinking now and for another four to eight years.
