Matured 18 months in 60% new French oak hogsheads. Lehmann's depth of reach into Barossa's finest sites is evident here, upholding the depth of style and greatness of its flagship, even in a cooler season. A magnificently full, vibrant purple hue, it's packed with compact, dense, crunchy, bright black fruits of all kinds, dressed in a gown of finely woven tannins. High-cocoa dark chocolate French oak has been perfectly tuned to the season. Integrity and persistence define great longevity.

Ink black core with a deep purple rim. Blackberry, boudin noir and mint aromatics. Powerful and intense on the tongue with black and blue fruits in abundance. That said, there's as much intense black stone minerality and a smoked meat undertone that brings it all into balance. Tannins are ripe and grainy to control all the power presented to them, and it lingers for ages at the finish. A textbook Barossa shiraz that will cellar for many years.

The 2017 Stonewell Shiraz is a very soft, fresh rendition of the variety, in what was a cool year. This is spicy and supple and layered with blood plum, boysenberry, mulberry, hints of blackberry and licorice. Cocoa dusting finishes the palate, which is shaped by fine, almost silty tannins. Very smart. The wine was matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak hogsheads. This wine proves that generalizations in wine are risky; generally, I have not been enamored by the red wines from Barossa in 2017, as many—important to distinguish this does not mean "all"—at this stage are beginning to fray and dry out. Perhaps they will come around, but I am not sure. Suffice to say, this wine bucks the perceptions I have of this season, for this variety, grown in this region. An important realization. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
