About this wine
Yalumba 175th Celebration 6 pack
Yalumba, one of the world’s great family-owned wineries, is celebrating 175 glorious years. To toast this extraordinary achievement, we’ve curated a stunning six-pack that showcases their iconic constellation of beloved shiraz and cabernet sauvignon cuvees. Wines of this calibre absolutely justify their price tag, but seeing as we’re celebrating, we’ve thrown in two bottles of the new Rudi Kronberger Cabernet Shiraz on the house.
This pack contains:
2 x Yalumba Rudi Kronberger Cabernet Shiraz, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley 2017
1 x Yalumba The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra 2017
1 x Yalumba The Caley Cabernet Shiraz, Coonawarra-Barossa Valley 2018
2 x Yalumba The Octavius Old Vine Shiraz, Barossa 2017
The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon needs no introduction, it’s been knocking socks off since 1987. On the 2017 bottling, Halliday Wine Companion noted its ‘classic, herbal-flecked blackberry and blackcurrant fruit at its core is all elegance and latent power. The Octavius Shiraz, their flagship bottling of Barossa’s signature variety, comes from vines planted in 1854. Again, Halliday Wine Companion is straight to the point: ‘This is a thrilling wine. There are no two ways about it.’ The Caley Cabernet Shiraz, the pinnacle of Yalumba’s winemaking, is a jaw-dropping rendition of the great Australian red blend. Huon Hooke awarded it a near-perfect, 99-point score and affirmed that it ‘has what it takes to age and reward cellaring for the long term.’

Good depth and hue of colour it's still purple-tinted at this age. The bouquet is fresh and bold, replete with forest-floor/mint and dried-herb nuances, while the palate is very powerful, concentrated, full-bodied and firmly constructed. Deep-set cassis fruit as well, still partially in hiding. This is a dense, power-packed cabernet-driven red with abundant tannins. Tremendously long finish. A magnificent wine, which has what it takes to age and reward cellaring for the long term. (80% Coonawarra cabernet, 20% Barossa shiraz)

Halliday Wine Companion
For long an Australian icon, this has really lightened up its act. For the better. The sort of exotic perfume-lifted lilac floral-seldom seen across shiraz from such a warm zone. Pulpy and juicy in the mouth, rather than over-extracted and desiccated. A beautiful sash of oak, directing a cavalcade of clove, five spice and ample blue to dark fruit references along a skein of peppery acidity. Riveting complexity and the feeling of something far lighter than the ABV suggests. This is a thrilling wine. There are no two ways about it.

An icon in Australian wine, Yalumba’s Coonawarra-born Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon has long stood at the pointy end of our country's fine-wine pyramid, and I’m sure many will fondly remember occasions when a well-cellared example of the Menzies has knocked their socks off. Nothing’s changed, perhaps the oak has been dialled back a little, but that classic, herbal-flecked blackberry and blackcurrant fruit at its core is all elegance and latent power. Fine spice and graphite-like tannins lay down layers on the palate. The finish is long and with impeccable balance, trailing off with a vapour trail of blackcurrant, cedar and olive tapenade. It’s a classic.

Samuel Smith established Yalumba in 1849 and 165 years later descendant Robert Hill Smith now presides over Australia's oldest family owned wine company. Yalumba owns vineyards and sources fruit primarily in the Barossa and Coonawarra. Robert Hill-Smith manages to combine conservatism and tradition with up-to-date winemaking technology and thinking. Yalumba produces a considerable number of different wines across the price-point spectrum from a multitude of varieties, all with a focus on quality, varietal and regional expression. The strong winemaking team is headed up by Louisa Rose, a brilliantly intuitive winemaker whose white wines are some of the best in the country.
