About this wine
St Hallett Planted 1919 Shiraz Eden Valley
St Hallett’s Planted 1919 is a new premium flagship wine for the heritage Barossa label. Made from vines over 100 years old, it honours the Centenarian vines of the Barossa and the growers who have tended them. The debut release of this cuvée is the 2015 Shiraz, dedicated to the Noack family, sixth-generation Barossa farmers who have cared for these vines for 30 years. Planted 1919 is striking in its intensity, surprising in its freshness, and utterly memorable. Its ageing potential knows no bounds.
Fruit for this wine is hand-harvested and fermented as a single parcel, with skin contact for 10 days. It is matured for 18 months in 100% French oak (34% new), and then left to age for two further years in bottle. The result is a medium-to-full bodied Barossa red, rich with dense black fruits, dried herbs, white pepper and florals, leading to a lingering finish.

This is a single parcel from Springton ,up in the Eden Valley, and is the first St Hallett release into the luxury red wine space (RRP AUD$450). The nose has aromas of coal smoke, violet, wet stones, blueberries, pepper and dry woody spices. Licorice and sarsaparilla. The palate has striking intensity and depth with a very intense yet fresh feel to the palate. Sleek, long, glossy and melted tannins. Delicious. Focused. Beautifully refreshing acidity. A distinctive and impressive new release from St Hallett.

Deep, bright and youthful red/purple colour, with an intense red-fruit flavour, raspberry and redcurrant, the palate full-bodied and concentrated, powerful and rich, yet also supple and already accessible. Refreshing acidity keeps the finish energised. A big, solid red with the legs to develop positively for many years.

Hand-picked fruit. Matured in new and seasoned French oak barrels. St Hallett has a long history uniting some of the Barossa's finest sites in Old Block. This new flagship sings the virtues of a single site, in the soothing voice of ancient Eden Valley vines. In spite of the massive bottle, this is not part of the 'bigger is better' brigade. Breathtakingly fresh and pure at 6 years old, the glorious 2015 season unites wonderful rose petal fragrance with tangy morello cherry fruits, a backdrop of bright acidity and superb, fine-ground tannins. Grand testimony to Toby Barlow's sensitivity and considerable talent.

The bouquet is fragrant and expressive. Spicy/savoury aromas run along and through the exquisitely silky palate, with its base of cedar and purple and blue fruits encased in a diaphanous web of polished tannins and oak. The magic of this wine lies in its perfection that suspends time, making it gorgeous to drink now or in decades to come.

The Lindner Family established St Hallett in the heart of the Barossa Valley near Tanunda in 1944. After a relatively sleepy beginning producing fortified wines, the winery restructured its ownership. The rumbustious pioneering energy of Barossa legend Bob McLean during the 1980s and 1990s saw an extraordinary metamorphosis. Stuart Blackwell, St Hallett’s winemaker since 1972 oversaw the development of Langton's Classified 'Excellent' St Hallet Old Block Shiraz, perhaps one of the most successful ultra-fine Barossa Shirazes and an early cult-type wine. Alongside Old Block, St Hallett makes a range of wines that consistently over-deliver including the classic reserve style Blackwell Shiraz.
