About this wine
KRONDORF Stone Altar Old Vine Grenache, Barossa Valley
At the foot of the iconic Kaiserstuhl mountain, the early Silesian settlers of the Barossa constructed a stone altar – a sanctuary for prayer in their new homeland. The Krondorf Stone Altar Grenache is made from the best available parcels of Grenache from each vintage, vinified in small-format open fermenters for seven days of skin contact to extract colour and tannins then matured in large French oak casks for 12 months. The wine expresses aromas of turkish delight, dark cherry and raspberry, with notes of liquorice and spice. Medium bodied, a core of supple fruit leads to flavours of dark cherry and raspberry while a fine chalky tannin profile provides a delightful textural element to the wine.

Raspberry licorice, maraschino cherries, roses and fresh leather aromas on the nose. The palate is plush and palate staining with accents of red berries and spice. Fine bitter tannins provide the scaffolding needed to control the bold fruits. A touch of heat on the finish suggests a higher alcohol content, but it is old-vine grenache with loads of personality. Spot-on fruit ripeness shows in the freshness. A delightful, full-bodied grenache 16 JAN 2024

Grenache is back in favour and that means the Barossa Valley is embracing its old vine Grenache vines big time. And rightly so when it brings forth such alluring scents and flavours as these. Brings a raft of dark plum, red and black fruits with crushed herbs and musk, potpourri aromas. Very Grenache. Medium bodied and good depth across the palate with a focus on red berries, cranberry and crushed herbs, closing with some tasty bitter chocolate notes. Twelve months maturation in French oak has contributed a creamy texture and classy tannin profile. Plenty to enjoy here.

Mid-magenta-splashed crimson with aromas of wild raspberry, red plum and strawberry fruits cut with hints of gingerbread, citrus blossom, dried citrus rind, barbecued meats, exotic spice and earth. Ripe, fruit-pure and packed with raspberry lift, layers of spice and floral facets and a lovely flow and presence on the palate; fine in tannin, sweet in fruit yet savoury, sapid and super moreish.
