About this wine
LANGTONS Tapanappa Whalebone Vineyard + Penley Estate Helios Upgrade 6 pack
Tapanappa Whalebone Vineyard Blend 2020, Wrattonbully, SA
Medium to deep ruby colour with purple tinges. The bouquet is oaky and pungent, with some camphor and mint-eucalypt forest overtones, the palate a bit rasping and astringent when first poured, with the flavours turning to polished leather, red fruits lurking largely obscured beneath. It needs time to mellow and soften. There is richness and concentration here, and a very long carry. (52% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 24% cabernet franc)
Penley Estate Helios 2020, Coonawarra, SA
A lovely vintage, excellent fruit, wild fermentation, some extended maceration but time not specified, aged 18 months in French barrels, 40% new. Despite the hefty 1.6kg bottle, this wine is anything but weighty. An excellent dark garnet hue, it's resplendent with pure cabernet aromas and flavours. A latent power and beauty at the same time, with exceptional tannins, long and finely chiselled.

Jeni Port
52/24/24% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc, each fermented separately. Matured for 20 months in new French barriques before blending; 420 dozen made. Poor flowering and fruit set in 2020 resulted in a Whalebone Vineyard crop of just 1t/ha. It was decided to blend all three varieties and release it as a young wine. Displays all the immediate fresh and juicy appeal that comes with Wrattonbully fruit, with a solid core of ripe blackberry, dark spices, anise, a touch of Aussie bush/eucalypt and well-integrated vanilla-pod flashes of oak. Well trimmed on the palate in beautifully crafted tannins.

Small batches of the best parcels of fruit, matured separately in French oak for 18 months (30% new). Blackberry pie on the nose, this is concentrated and pure in its expression of both Coonawarra (black fruit, eucalyptus and ferrous) and exotic spice. On the palate the tannins are pronounced, and they certainly impact the fruit, but it is clear from the sheer volume of flavour that swells in the mouth that they will be no match in time. They will recede into the tidal wave of flavour and serve only to carry and guide the fruit through the finish, as Helios' chariot drove him across the sky. Inchoate as this is, it will emerge a superstar.

Wow the swagger on this wine. This is a powerhouse in the most measured of ways. It’s complex with blackcurrant, cedarwood, bay leaf, tomato and sweet redcurrant but it presents ‘as one’ and the finish, golly, it’s just so lengthy and so wonderfully rippled with tannin. This is a great option for the cellar. It’s tannic, powerful, complex and long, and it’s balanced with it.
