ABOUT THE WINERY

Langton’s Selections
Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling, Mount Horrocks Shiraz
Mount Horrocks winery is located in the old railway station at Auburn, a one-pub town and the birthplace of Australian poet C.J. Dennis. The railway has since been pulled up, but the platform and station buildings make a fine cellar door.
The Ackland brothers established the Mount Horrocks label in 1981 to process fruit from their substantial vineyards, first planted in 1967. Jeffrey Grosset acted as a consultant winemaker for many years. The wine business was eventually acquired by the formidably independent and competitive Stephanie Toole, who has managed to combine her intuitive flair for marketing with the production of high quality wine. She makes the wine herself. Stephanie has been a forceful proponent for the region and has done much to entice fine wine lovers and critics to embrace the wines of the Clare. Her competitiveness with her partner Jeffrey Grosset is legendary. They will race each other to find the best fruit, yet they each delight in each other’s successes.
The Mount Horrock’s Watervale Riesling is a classic minerally Clare Riesling with plenty of clear fruit definition and flavour. The Watervale Shiraz could well be a rising star. It has plenty of varietal definition and perfume, yet excellent richness and suppleness on the palate.
Mount Horrocks has a minimal presence on the market. The Cordon-Cut Riesling is something of a wine institution and always worth seeking out – if you have a sweet tooth. The wines are all fantastic and good value, which is part of the reason they rarely appear on the market. People drink them – too quickly!
