About this wine
HENSCHKE Mount Edelstone Shiraz, Eden Valley
With its pure blackberry, sage and black pepper aromas, underlying savoury complexity and fine lacy tannins Henschke Mount Edelstone is one of Australia’s great single vineyard wines. The wine is vinified in "headed-down" open fermenters and completes fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned French and American hogsheads. A further20 to 22 months maturation in the same oak takes place prior to blending and bottling. Delicious upon release, Mount Edelstone typically reaches optimum maturity after five to 15 years.

James Halliday
102-year-old single vineyard, matured in 92% French and 8% American hogsheads (28% new) for 18 months... The colour is that of an 18 month-old (not 36 months) Shiraz, the aromas of black fruits, licorice and black pepper, the tannins firm and enduring, yet in balance with the powerful fruit. I remain to be convinced this is suited to drinking while the '13 comes around, the best solution is to leave both to themselves for five or so years. 97 points, Wine Companion (1/2017).

Huon Hooke
"Youthfully bright, deep red/purple colour and a gloriously aromatic, raspberry and fragrant herb bouquet, the palate very sweet and lush with deliciously ripe fruit flavour and tremendous complexity. There is a little heat from alcohol and a velvety smoothness across the palate. Gorgeous wine, very Eden Valley in its fruit style." 95 points, Huon Hooke (March 2017)

Campbell Mattinson
"It’s quite a beauty. Satiny. Curranty. A flood of smooth, berried fruit with fragrant herbs, peppers and blossoms floating throughout. It’s warm and rich but there’s more than a little enchantment to it. It’s pretty, as is the Edelstone way, but substantial. Tannin is fine and just-assertive-enough. There’s a smoky, peppery, almost meaty character here but it comes enmeshed with the fruit. You have to enjoy the warmer style of shiraz, certainly, but it’s a long way from being overdone and it really is quite seriously beautiful. It can also be consumed any time from now, give or take." 95 points, Campbell Mattinson (January 2017)

"(produced from vines that were planted in 1912) Bright purple. Expansive cherry, cassis, pipe tobacco and vanilla scents on the intensely perfumed nose, lent urgency by a subtle mineral overtone. Fleshy dark fruit liqueur, floral pastille and mocha flavors are supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Becomes spicier with aeration and displays a suave blend of depth, power and energy. Finishes sweet, smooth and extremely persistent, displaying youthful tannins and lingering dark berry and peppery spice qualities." 94 points, Josh Raynolds (October 2017)

Wine Spectator
"Plush and powerful, this opens with dried black olive and savory, minerally accents to the dark berry and plum flavors. Offering plenty of depth and complexity, the finish echoes with details of five-spice powder and anise. Drink now through 2030." 93 points, Wine Spectator (March 2017)

"Medium to deep garnet in color with a purple rim, the 2014 Shiraz Mount Edelstone Keyneton Vineyard exudes a nose that is simply beguiling, exuding earth, meat and mineral layers over a core of black berries and mulberries, plus hints of mincemeat, sautéed herbs and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with a firm backbone of chewy tannins and marked freshness, it is savory, broody and taut at this youthful juncture, finishing with lingering fried herbs notes. I love the singularity and overall complexity of this wine, but there is a pronounced herbal character and hardness that robs it of a higher rating." 92+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown (September 2017)

"From vines planted in 1912, this has been an icon of South Australia Shiaz since 1952, when it was first bottled as a single-vineyard wine. Menthol and vanilla notes frame black cherries and cassis on the nose, while the palate reveals supple tannins and meaty, savory complexities. The finish is softly dusty, fine and long. Drink now–2030." 95 points, Wine Enthusiast (April 2017)

"Nicely contained and composed. Really fresh blackberry fruits, dark cherries, chocolate, roasted coffee and roasting herbs. The texture is fine and silky. A wealth of blackberry and dark plum flavors that hold the middle palate with effortless length. Screw cap." 94 points, Nick Stock (July 2017)
