About this wine
HENSCHKE Hill of Grace Shiraz, Eden Valley
Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz is Australia’s greatest single vineyard wine. Its fame is connected profoundly with the work of Stephen and Prue Henschke. This intensely perfumed, concentrated and velvet textured wine evokes a family tradition, extreme craftsmanship and a beautiful inimitable aesthetic. It belongs to an unfolding and endless story that evokes the soul of this Australian age.
The vineyard was established at Parrot Hill in the Eden Valley (around 1860) by Nicolaus Stanitzki and has since been handed down through the generations to the Henschke family.

Medium deep crimson. Beautiful wine with intense roasted walnut, blackberry pastille, graphite aromas with hints of marzipan. Well concentrated and classical in structure with lovely developed blackberry, roasted walnut, roasted almond flavours, fine grainy claret-like structure and underlying savoury notes. Finishes firm with ample fruit complexity and mineral length. Lovely modulated power and elegance. 12.5% alc Drink now – 2030+

Medium to full purple-red; a potent and intense bouquet with cassis tinged with olive in classic Cabernet fashion; well-balanced and integrated oak. A glorious wine on the palate with wonderful fruit ranging through cassis to raspberry; impeccable oak handling and a very long, perfectly balanced finish. Deserves all its innumerable trophies.

Gorgeously sweet, floral, exotic centre, like essence of lavender. A beautiful Hill of Grace shiraz, murky with divine flavour – it comes across as natural and distinctly unsterile, in the best and most natural sense of those words. Hints here too of leather and farm floor, though it’s also lively, fleshy, strident and strong. At its peak for my taste. A beautiful old shiraz.

This benchmark 1986 Shiraz Hill of Grace displays a fabulous mixture of power and subtlety. There is a wonderful array of aromas with wave after wave of cocoa bean, black earth, cloves and graphite notes and charcuterie-aged complexity. A firm, muscular palate follows, retaining tension and torque while offering secondary flavors of aged meat, Chinese five spice and truffle over a long, sustained finish. Exceptional with years left to run.
