James Halliday
Cabernet sauvignon, malbec and shiraz from 1919 and '75 plantings on the Eastern and Central Vineyards. A nigh-on perfect vintage for this blend, particularly the two headline components, the shiraz falling into line without even a hint of displeasure. The result is a medium-bodied wine with cassis and red berries offset by some blackberry building complexity and complementing the cabernet tannins.

Wonderful. Smells like a bag of licorice all sorts, or a little like that fancy pastis I bought the other day for $100, though it’s tempered with dark chocolate, ripe blackberry and plum, roses and violet, pencils and biscuit oak. Medium bodied, thick and tannic, but kind of supple and delicious too, with a rose oil mouth-perfume, and then, a fair bit of Cabernet lash and strictness through the finish. And just when you thought you’d escaped unscathed, whoosh, whoop, crack – you’ve been tamed. Wonderful Wendouree.
