James Halliday
45% cabernet sauvignon, 35% malbec and 20% shiraz from 1919 and '75 plantings on the Eastern and Central Vineyards. Bright hue; the fragrant bouquet draws one in like a moth to a candle with its interplay of cassis and plum on a positively juicy palate all the way through to the finish and aftertaste. Here the cadenced discipline of its siblings gives way to sheer pleasure.

Complex wine with multi-faceted aroma and flavour that manages to be simultaneously dense and weighty, yet curiously light and medium bodied. Yes, I know, it doesn’t make any sense, perhaps best I go sit in Pseuds Corner for a while while I contemplate this further. OK. I’m back. Dried roses, cedar, menthol, hazelnuts, redcurrant and blackcurrant, a slight gum leafiness in with a smattering of liquorice richness. Almost juicy and fresh, certainly vibrant, all redcurrant and roses, running high compression tannin, clean acidity, and a long fine, but grainily tannic finish ringing with slightly tart acidity. Elemental, but still fairly approachable. Much to admire here, and certainly, its best days are a long way ahead of it.

Deep red colour with a tint of purple. There's a hint of bacon-fat together with dark fruit aromas, and the palate is loaded with tannin seamlessly woven into its rich fruit flavour. There's a good firm grip to close. A serious red wine, solid and full-bodied, and it will certainly age well. An impressive wine that can already be enjoyed, but it would be a minor crime to drink it too young.

Very much a polished, fragrant and slightly floral wine that has a violet-like edge on some very bright, precise and tarry blue fruits. There are also blueberries and blue plums, which meet with some attractive oak gloss and spices. The palate has a supple and gently muscular feel to it with a very even, focused and elegant style. Blue plums and cassis hold long, and there's some nicely balanced ripeness here. The tannins are glossy and snap into the finish. Power with grace. Balanced, deep and succulent.
