About this wine
Oakridge Wines 864 Winery Block Cabernet Sauvignon, Yarra Valley
The 864 Winery Block Cabernet Sauvignon is a stately wine renowned for its intensity and refined aromatic qualities. Expect a multitude of black fruits, swathes of spice, tobacco, iodine, and some ferrous notes. The 864 Winery Block Cabernet Sauvignon achieves a remarkable sense of depth, with chalky tannins, and long smooth finish.
The Winery block, planted in 1996 on Coldstreams’s grey alluvial loam, is north-facing at 95 metres above sea level. The mixed clonal selection is farmed to yield 4.9 tonnes per hectare. Fruit is hand-picked and sorted. In the winery, pump-overs are conducted twice daily. After fermentation, the wine is left on skins for four weeks prior to pressing, before spending 15 months in French oak barrels.
Representing the pinnacle of winemaking at Oakridge, the 864 range are high-scoring, limited-release, single-block wines that stand out internationally as exceptional varietal examples.

Huon Hooke
Deep red-purple colour; bright. Crushed mulberry and cassis on the nose, very ripe fruit doing most of the talking. A subtle patina of pencilly oak. The palate is loaded with concentrated fruit and very drying tannins and this results in a cheek-sucking grip at the end. Full bodied, solid cabernet that will reward time in the cellar—indeed, it needs it. It'll be worth the wait. Outstanding cabernet.

Philip Rich
Fruit from a 1996-planted vineyard. Four weeks post-fermentation maceration, matured in French barriques (35% new) for 15 months. Virtually identical winemaking to the Original Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon but, as always, this is the denser, more powerful and structured wine. On the nose there's a core of perfectly ripened black fruits, crushed violets, dark chocolate and graphite. The medium bodied, firmly structured and persistent palate is equally good, and anyone fortunate enough to still have a bottle 10–15 years (if not longer) from now will be well rewarded.

Oakridge Estate, founded in 1978, has had a longstanding reputation for quality. It has been blessed with a succession of talented winemakers. The winery, located at 864 Maroondah Highway at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley, is led by esteemed veteran winemaker Dave Bicknell. It is under his watch that Oakridge has blossomed and excelled. The fruit is sourced from both owned and independent grower vineyards. David and his team are renowned for producing exceptional single vineyard wines made with minimal intervention, and in using innovative and sustainable practices in winemaking and viticulture. The wines are beautifully made and illustrate the idea that winemaker’s intuition and skill are completely intertwined with the idea of distinguished vineyard site. The Reserve style wines, labelled 864 and released in top vintages, are outstanding and comprise a Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
