Robe is part of the Limestone Coast Zone, a vast region greatly influenced by the Southern Ocean to the west and inland lakes to the east. Robe itself has a cool maritime climate with a long, gentle growing season. Vineyards are mostly planted on red-brown clay over limestone terra rossa soils. Rapid development of viticultural landbegan to take-off in the mid 1990s. Whilst there are several small boutique wineries in the region, many vineyards supply Franceuit to the major premium wine companies. Varieties that thrive in the region include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
