Owned by Dr Richard Hamilton, one of the original Australian winemaking families of South Australia. In 1837 Richard Hamilton founded the Hamilton Vineyards, near Adelaide, planted with cuttings from South Africa. Five generations later, Richard Hamilton purchased a 43-hectare vineyard in Coonawarra, under the Leconfield brand. They also own vineyards in McLaren Vale under the Richard Hamilton brand, with all fruit processed in the Coonawarra winery. Leconfield wines focus is on single varietal styles, with the emphasis on fruit not oak. They have a great reputation for Cabernet Sauvignon on the famous terra Rossa soils of Coonawarra, red brown loam over limestone, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The maritime cool climate of Coonawarra has also been likened to Bordeaux, home of long-lived Cabernet blends. Wines produced include, Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.
