About this wine
1847 WINERY Grand Pappy's Shiraz, Barossa Valley
The 1847 WINERY Grand Pappy's Shiraz is a bold and luxurious expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz. The 2020 vintage, in particular, is lauded for its luscious character and deep maroon-black colour. On the nose, it offers a complex array of aromas including chocolate, aniseed, spices, soy, black olives, and blackberries. There's a noticeable presence of oak, which will integrate beautifully over time. This wine showcases the classic attributes of premium Barossa Shiraz, with its rich, full-bodied profile and impressive depth of flavour.

The colour is almost opaque with traces of purple on the rim. It’s a big opulent style with stacks of fruit intensity bursting from its striking palate. Dark plum, blackcurrant and dark chocolate with a slightly liqueur cherry character. The palate is full and concentrated with plenty of oak to complement the deep and dense fruit. It’s a big wine, yes, but there is a smooth seamless texture creating a wonderful mouth feel.

A classical Australian idiom: power, lavish fruit and salubriously applied structural elements. A little bottle age has come up trumps, servicing notes of porcini dashi, menthol, beef bouillon and Sichuan pepper, all corralled by malty oak. The acidity, a bit shrill, but the overall impression is one of forceful precision.

Lovers of big, bold, generous Barossa Shiraz will be right at home here, although deep pockets may be required. There is a real lusciousness to this wine. The colour is maroon/black. We have aromas of chocolate, aniseed, spices, soy, black olives and blackberries. There is a fair bit of timber here but it is early days and well in the process of integrating. Those not in a rush to enjoy this Barossan beauty will be well rewarded. Seamless on the palate, with a good flick of acidity, there is serious length here. Very fine, sleek tannins. Lingers beautifully. Love it. Fifteen to twenty years.

Deep crimson in the glass with concentrated dark plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits cut with hints of baking spices, fruitcake, earth, roasting meats, licorice, dark chocolate and turned earth. Savoury with a rich fruit flow, tight, fine sandy tannins and some nice mineral velocity, finishing long with a slightly broody dark-fruited stare.
