About this wine
Bass Phillip Wines Estate Pinot Noir, South Gippsland
Bass Phillip’s Estate Pinot Noir is a complex wine with superb fruit intensity and structure. It displays vibrant red berry fruit, and layers of earthy, mineral complexity that unfurl, and evolve over time. The biodynamically managed Estate vineyard is close-planted to 8,500 vines/hectare and cropped at a low one tonne/acre. Soils in the area are free-draining and mineral rich which can encourage high vigour. This, coupled with the region’s high rainfall, can lead to disease pressure; therefore, careful management of the canopy is essential. Meticulous management of the vineyard ensures the Estate Pinot Noir consistently expresses enchanting fruit purity, multi-layered complexity and a sense of place unlike any other in Australia.

Jane Faulkner
What an excellent start to the ’23 pinots at Bass Phillip with the first tier, the Estate, showcasing gorgeous fruit flavours and a high level of detail. There’s an energy and vitality, too, alongside sweet black cherries, kirsch and aniseed with fresh herbs to the fore. It's obviously still very much primary yet compelling nonetheless. Fuller bodied, there’s a succulence across the palate that is caressed by fine tannins and bright acidity. A bit of a showstopper.

Huon Hooke
Deep red with a purple tinge, very darkly coloured for an Australian pinot, the bouquet reserved and discreet but richly endowed with ripe dark-cherry fruit, some fragrant herbs in the background but the bright pinot fruit holding centre-stage. Delicious depth of sweetly ripe cherry favour on the palate, bold and firmly supported by plentiful fine tannins, drawing out superbly in a long tail.
