About this wine
BIONDI SANTI Brunello di Montalcino
The luxurious farmhouse of Il Greppo sits in a propitious position where the terroir for viticulture has been appreciated for centuries. The 47 hectares that play host to 80 years old vines are the product of the vision of Franco Biondi-Santi who began work on expanding the family holdings in 1988.
With Il Greppo at the centre, Franco began to weave a tapestry of vines following the contours of the land. The solid of this amphitheatre are rich in stony marls known locally as galestro which feed the Sangiovese Grosso (the Brunello Biondi-Santi, or BBS11 clone) which produces aromatic and expressive age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino that offer a freshness born of high altitudes, cool nights and vinification in cement vats. The wines are raised in large traditional Slavonian oak casks known as botti.

Jacopo Biondi Santi was already making wine at Il Greppo when the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Annata was produced. His father, Franco Biondi Santi, would pass away in 2013 at the age of 91. The winemaking approach is unchanged despite the father to son transition. This wine shows extra richness and texture with focused fruit aromas that are graceful but also powerful. There are hints of ripe fruit with dried cherry and prune buried deep within the bouquet. In the mouth, this Brunello shows good structure and acidity with a slightly denser feel compared to past vintages.

Medium intense hue with bricking. Extremely refined nose intermixing prune, cherry, Havana and mild spices. Tightly-wound, silky tannins on the palate are lifted by a wave that is full and ethereal yet remarkably fresh. Elegance and delicacy.

A few swirls of the glass release delicate, enticing aromas of red berry, rose, iris, tobacco, new leather and star anise on this elegant, almost ethereal wine. The restrained palate sneaks up you, offering tart cherry, crushed strawberry, white pepper and a note of black tea alongside a backbone of firm, refined tannins. Still primary and tight, it needs a few more years to fully open up and develop. Drink 2020–2031.

With each generation at Biondi-Santi, Ferruccio’s vision advances a step further. His son, Tancredi, assumed control of the estate in 1922, effectively becoming the ambassador for Montalcino’s wines.
Biond-Santi remains a beacon for traditionally made Rosso and Brunello. At 90 years of age, Franco Biondi-Santi insisted on leading my tasting of wines from cask and bottle. The years go by for all of us, but I haven’t seen any decrease in Biondi-Santi’s enthusiasm and passion. The Biondi-Santi wines are more approachable young than they used to be, but little else appears to have changed.
The current production levels rarely exceed 80,000 bottles, including about 10,000 bottles of Reserve (only in exceptional harvests). The grape harvest is carried out entirely by hand and usually begins in mid September. The grapes are carried in baskets to the end of the row of vines, where a group of grape pickers selects the grapes, bunch by bunch, destining only the very best ones to go to the production of the future Brunello.
