About this wine

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Biondi-Santi produces this Brunello at the Tenuta Greppo estate, the historic birthplace of the region's winemaking tradition. The fruit originates from vineyards at altitudes between 300 and 500 metres, where the soil consists of galestro and marl. These high-altitude sites provide the Sangiovese Grosso with the necessary ventilation and temperature shifts to develop its characteristic acidity. The estate remains a symbol of prestige and continuity within the Montalcino landscape.

The winemaking follows the strict traditionalism established by the Biondi-Santi family. Fermentation takes place in cement vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine then matures for thirty-six months in large Slavonian oak casks, a process that prioritises structural development over wood influence. This patient approach allows the wine to clarify naturally and acquire the longevity for which it is globally renowned. No small barrels or new oak are used during production.

The nose offers scents of dried cherry, rose petal and flint. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and austere, featuring flavours of pomegranate, orange peel and savoury herbs. High acidity and firm tannins provide a precise, vertical structure. The finish is persistent and clean. This wine is a primary choice for Australian collectors seeking the original expression of Brunello and exceptional cellaring potential.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Biondi Santi

With each generation at Biondi-Santi, Ferruccio’s vision advances a step further. His son, Tancredi, assumed control of the estate in 1922, effectively becoming the ambassador for Montalcino’s wines.

Biond-Santi remains a beacon for traditionally made Rosso and Brunello. At 90 years of age, Franco Biondi-Santi insisted on leading my tasting of wines from cask and bottle. The years go by for all of us, but I haven’t seen any decrease in Biondi-Santi’s enthusiasm and passion. The Biondi-Santi wines are more approachable young than they used to be, but little else appears to have changed.

The current production levels rarely exceed 80,000 bottles, including about 10,000 bottles of Reserve (only in exceptional harvests). The grape harvest is carried out entirely by hand and usually begins in mid September. The grapes are carried in baskets to the end of the row of vines, where a group of grape pickers selects the grapes, bunch by bunch, destining only the very best ones to go to the production of the future Brunello.
