James Suckling
A tight but complex nose of mixed berries with sweet, creamy spice and turkish delight. Some herbs in the mix, too, even a hint of wild onion. Medium-to full-bodied with a dense, silky palate that’s full of flavor. Balanced and even, with a lightly firm, spice-coated tannin frame. The finish is a little firm for now, but this will be super long and luxuriant in a few years’ time, when everything has come together. Super. Delicious to taste now, but drink from 2024.

The Ca' Rome' 2018 Barbaresco Rio Sordo reveals tones of dark fruit and spice all interwoven with licorice, tar and spent embers. This is a medium-bodied red with a spicy and savory side that is specific to this rather cool vintage (with a little extra heat at the end of the growing season). The wine shows power and some light texture in the mouth.

Rich yet compact aromas and flavors of red and black berries and cherries, together with notes of wet earth, forest floor and even a hint of menthol. Full-bodied, dense and silky with lots of refined tannin that is starting to meld nicely into the rich fruit. Big finish that’s already long, but will only gain with time.

The 2017 Barolo Cerretta is a dark, mysterious wine. Black cherry, lavender, sage, mint and licorice bring out a darker, more muscular side of Nebbiolo. Firm, driving tannins add to an impression of gravitas and power. Even with all of its tannic clout, the Cerretta is endowed with terrific balance and class. This is impressive.

The 2017 Barolo Rapèt is bright, juicy and absolutely delicious. This fruity Serralunga Barolo offers tons of immediacy in the open-knit style that is typical of parts of this Serralunga vineyard. Silky, impeccably balanced tannins add to the wine's considerable allure. The 2017 is not super complex, but it is racy and dangerously delicious.

Bright aromas of dark berries, chocolate and flowers with some orange peel. Medium to full body and creamy tannins. Fresh acidity and a vivid finish. Drink now.
