About this wine
CASCINA FONTANA Barolo Mixed 6-pack MV
Sixth-generation Barolo producer Mario Fontana ventured out on his own in 1995 and has been refining his traditionally styled wines ever since. Their estate is located in the Barolo hills of Le Langhe, south of Alba, in Piedmont, Northwest Italy. This three vintage vertical contains the 2014, 2015 and 2016, each classic, prestigious wines that are the purest expression of the idyllic land of their birth. Fontana’s Barolo is forged from three cru vineyards, Villero (cru Villero) and Valletti (cru Mariondino) in Castiglione Falletto and Gallinotto (cru Giachini) in the commune of La Morra. Each site yields its own unique characteristics to impart on the Cascina Fontana Barolo: structure, elegance, acidity, minerality and depth.
This case includes two bottles of each of the following:
Cascina Fontana Barolo DOCG 2014
Cascina Fontana Barolo DOCG 2015
Cascina Fontana Barolo DOCG 2016

This producer always makes wines of elegance and clarity, and in 2014, they’ve continued that theme in a difficult vintage. Red fruits, spice and pepper, mint, pretty floral notes like chamomile tea, damp leaves. Medium bodied, autumnal and savoury, but with a core of ripe red fruits, gentle rasp of tannin, and a tobacco infused finish of good length. It’s pretty approachable now, but won’t fall of its perch anytime soon.

Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with a watery, orange rim. Fine raspberry fruit nose and supple raspberry fruit with a minerally twist on the finish. Lots of chewy tannins, too. Long.

Red and black fruits, almond, orange peel, flowers. Fine, red fruits, spice and peel, fresh and cool, tannin plays a slow hand then grips on the finish with a graphite handshake and a slightly peppery aftertaste. A wine that’s not trying too hard, and doing it well.

Incense and sandalwood aromas introduce this red, with plum, cherry, iron and tar flavors permeating the palate. Rich and complex, showing excellent harmony, fending off the dense, dusty tannins. Offers a long and resonant finish. Best from 2023 through 2043.

Classic style, a little understated, but full of charm. Red fruits, a little liquorice and sage, orange zest, spice and flowers. Mid-weight, some undergrowth, but full of almost succulent red fruits and blood orange, fine brick dust tannin, firm and long on a bright finish. So traditional and lovely. I think it will age beautifully too.
