About this wine
Castello di Volpaia Il Puro Gran Selezione, Chianti Classico DOCG
‘Il Puro’ or, The Pure, is so named as it’s made from 100% Sangiovese from the celebrated vineyard Casanova between similarly lauded vineyards of Coltassala and Balifico. Situated at an altitude of 500 metres on south-facing slopes of Volpaia above the sea level. The vineyard is organic and is home to 25 clones of 60-plus-year-old Sangiovese vines indigenous to Volpaia. The number of clones doesn’t just give the wine complexity, it preserves the genetic diversity and health of the vines.

James Suckling
Intense notes of cedar, cocoa, violets and tobacco, combined with tangy lemon, wild strawberry and cranberry. Sharp and precise with medium to full body and tight tannins. Intense. From organically grown grapes. Needs a couple of years to integrate. Try in 2024.

This is 100% Sangiovese made in a limited release of 1,900 bottles. The Volpaia 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casanova Il Puro is an organic wine in a pretty bottle with a red wax seal. The fruit is soft and round in this vintage with plenty of cherry, dried raspberry, spice and sweet leather. With fruit from sandstone soils, the finished wine undergoes 18 months in Allier French barrique. It boasts a full-bodied texture but ends on a silky note.
