Expert Review
LANGTONS
94-96/100 Andrew Caillard MW. Medium deep colour. Fresh roasted chestnut/ cassis aromas. Beautifuly concentrated and polished wine with crème de cassis/ roasted chestnut flavours, plentiful fine-grained tannins and savoury oak complexity. Build up quite muscular but finishes long and sweet. Lovely vinosity. Very good.
89-91/100 Robert Parker Jr. This is a solid, muscular, dense plum-colored wine with earthy cassis aromas as well as flavors. Medium to full-bodied, tannic and fresh, with a crisp profile, this husky Pauillac will require time. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030.
16.5/20 Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson. Darkest cherry crimson. Restrained spicy dark fruit. Sweeter and more chocolatey on the palate, both in flavour and texture. Supple savour from the tannins. Harmonious in a restrained style. Refined tannins. Moreish finish.
16.5/20 Steven Spurrier, Decanter. Robust, rather earthy fruit, then a touch of violets to lift it and a hint of leather, good wine, good future. Drink 2015-2025. (16.5 points)
90-93/100 James Molesworth, Wine Spectator. Dark plum, black currant and fig notes are melded together at the core, with ample tobacco and roasted wood spice hints starting to fill in along the edges. There's lots of singed wood on the finish, but also plenty of flesh and drive. A little bit old-school.
Chateau Batailley
Chateau Batailley is a 5th growth classified estate, located in the appellation of Pauillac on the left bank of Bordeaux. Owned by the Castéja family of négociants Borie-Manoux, it is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc. The name Batailley derives from the French word "bataille" (battle). It is thought that a battle did indeed take place in 1453 during the 100-years war, in the exact location of the property. Chateau Batailley has 55 hectares of vineyard holdings planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. A solid, reliable Pauillac, Chateau Batailley is known for its classic, slightly austere style and structure. Improvements in viticultural practices over the last few years have seen the wine display a greater emphasis of fruit.
