Fragrant, floral, precise, with graphite and crayon character that is immediately apparent on the nose. Captures the appellation and estate signature, with classicism and balance, depth through the mid palate and slim, savoury blue and black fruits. Well constructed, and no question that this can age - easy to project forward to think that in a decade this will be in full Batailley swing. 57% new oak for ageing, Casteja family estate.

The 2024 Batailley was picked from September 2—considerably earlier than other estates—until October 5. This was raised in 57% new oak barrels. It has an open-knit bouquet with blackberry, briar, mocha and graphite scents that emerge with time. This is finely delineated while keeping the typical Batailley style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine tannins and touches of pencil lead and black pepper leading to the cohesive, lightly grippy finish. The nicely composed 2024 should give 20 years of drinking pleasure.

A very classic Pauillac reminiscent of wines from the 1980s but more precise. This has medium body, fine tannins and a crisp and clean finish. Crushed-stone undertones. Vivid and bright. A blend of 81% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot and 4% petit verdot.

The 2024 Haut-Batailley offers up aroma of cherries, kirsch and petroleum jelly, followed by a medium-bodied, chunky and tannic palate.

Orange rind, cinnamon, sweet tobacco, vanilla and ripe cherries. Smells gorgeous. Sweet and lifted, a great mouthfeel - balanced, round and filling all at the same time. Punchy in terms of tannins but they soften almost straight away with a chalky finish - graphite, pencil lead and clove spice. Feels well structured, intense and concentrated with plenty of muscle on show. Serious but there’s a playful side too when the acidity bursts through. This is all about the grip and mouthfeel right now but you have signature Pauillac in there and I love the overall feel of the tannins. A fine wine to drink early, and age. Ageing 57% new oak.

Chateau Batailley
Chateau Batailley is a 5th growth classified estate, located in the appellation of Pauillac on the left bank of Bordeaux. Owned by the Castéja family of négociants Borie-Manoux, it is one of the oldest estates in the Medoc. The name Batailley derives from the French word "bataille" (battle). It is thought that a battle did indeed take place in 1453 during the 100-years war, in the exact location of the property. Chateau Batailley has 55 hectares of vineyard holdings planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. A solid, reliable Pauillac, Chateau Batailley is known for its classic, slightly austere style and structure. Improvements in viticultural practices over the last few years have seen the wine display a greater emphasis of fruit.
