About this wine
Château Coutet 1er Cru Classé, Sauternes-Barsac
A prestigious 1er Cru Classé estate, Château Coutet is the oldest and largest property in Barsac. The name ‘Coutet’ is derived from the Gascon’s word for knife and the estate’s wines are renowned for their fresh ‘cutting’ acidity and crisp lively palate. A blend of Sémillon (75.5%), Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%), the wines show beguiling aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, white flowers, honey and ginger, revealing more candied fruit, gingerbread notes with age. The wine is matured in oak barriques for 18 months.

Jane Anson
Delivers texture and flesh, love the aromatics that are sweet without being heavy, this has restraint and carefully-measured fleshy fruits, nectarine, pineapple, white peaches, lime zest, gunsmoke, perfectly-judged acidities. One of the wines of the vintage, great stuff from Philippe and Aline Baly.

The 2024 Coutet was picked over six tries although the final ones were not used with 134 g/L residual sugar this year. It has quite an intense bouquet with beautifully defined lemon thyme and light peach aromas. The palate is well balanced with a vivacious opening, lively apricot and quince notes and concentration effortlessly offset by the silver thread of acidity. Composed and persistent on the finish, this is a superb Coutet.

The 2024 Coutet is a dense, voluptuous Sauternes. Orange peel, apricot jam, passion fruit, pineapple and white flowers convey tons of exoticism. Ample and resonant on the palate, with superb depth, Coutet is outstanding in 2024.

Dried mangoes, pineapple, sweet lemons and some dried durian. Nicely unctuous with a long, flavorful finish. Waxy and medium- to full-bodied for a Barsac.

Orange blossom and lemon rind on the nose, soft and gentle aromatics. Clean and fresh, this has a lovely purity to it, not so sweet with some bitterness that comes in on the mid palate but this has a sleek frame and good definition to the elements. Pear, peach and a hint of honeyed orange. Pure and pristine.
