About this wine
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2me Cru Classé, Saint-Julien
Taking its name from its uniquely rocky terroir (“beau caillou” translates as “beautiful stones”), and Bertrand Ducru who purchased the estate in 1795, what we know today as Château Ducru Beaucaillou as a wine producing estate, has history stretches back to the 13th century.
Owned today by The Borie family (who have long-standing roots of their own in Bordeaux), the Château is, according to many, producing the best wines in their history at this very moment. The 2016 vintage has already been hailed as yet another monumental success for the winery with Antonio Galloni praising it as “simply magnificent”.

LANGTONS
94-96/100 Andrew Caiilard MW. Very deep colour. Intense dark berry/ elderberry/ cedar/ vanilla aromas. Concentrated, sweet fruit substantial fruit cassis/ elderberry/ black cherry/ chocolaty flavours, rich plentiful tannins and about. Lovely power, richness and flavor length.
93-95/100 Robert Parker Jr. One of the vintage’s stars, the 2011 Ducru Beaucaillou is a riveting blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme de cassis, licorice, subtle wood smoke and spring flowers, a surprising, full-bodied mouthfeel, and stunning intensity, purity, symmetry and length. Production at this estate used to be 12,000-15,000 cases, but after instituting a strict selection in addition to the smallest yields ever at this vineyard, it is down to 9,000 cases. The 2011 has considerable tannin, but it is soft and well-integrated. It should drink well for 20+ years. Readers should also be aware of just how sensational the second wine can be.
If you haven’t noticed yet, it’s time to jump on Bruno Borie’s bandwagon for the two wines being produced from separate parts of the Ducru Beaucaillou vineyard.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW
Deep garnet colored, the 2011 Ducru-Beaucaillou features fragrant notes of underbrush, tilled soil, tree bark and fungi over a core of red currant jelly, preserved plums, cassis and mulberries. Medium-bodied, elegant, refreshing and with a sturdy, grainy texture, it offers just enough black fruit and earthy layers in the mouth and a savory finish.

This shows excellent aromas of crushed berries, minerals and roses. Full body with silky, balanced tannins. Fruity and reserved. Shows wonderful finesse for the Médoc in 2011. Better after 2018.

This is rather well-endowed for the vintage, with thickly layered ganache, currant paste, fig sauce and blackberry confiture notes still grappling with one another, while briary grip and dark spice fill out the toast-fueled finish. Very long, showing a level of power that belies the vintage. Best from 2018 through 2028.

Inky damson in colour, with tobacco, liquorice and dark chocolate scents, this remains powerful, with a mouthwatering saline finish. It doesn't feel anywhere near ready to open up yet. Impressive in a year that many dismissed after the two powerhouses that preceded it.

Despite the huge weight of fruit and accompanying structure, this is a stylish wine. It's impressively dense, concentrated and solid. At the same time, the juicy black fruits give a generous, full-in-the-mouth character. Drink this very fine wine from 2022.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou
Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is a prestigious second growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) Chateau in Saint-Julien. Owned by the Borie family, the estate has 75 ha of vineyards encircling the Chateau, running alongside the Gironde river and extending to the fringes of the town of St Julien. The vineyards anchored on deep gravel and pebble soils are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The Chateau is widely considered a ‘super-second’, consistently producing a deeply coloured rich and powerful wine with tremendous capacity to age. A second wine called La Croix de Beaucaillou is also produced.
