About this wine
Château Durfort-Vivens 2me Cru Classé, Margaux
The Durfort property is one of the most historic in Bordeaux, dating back to the 12th century. It was owned by the influential Durfort de Duras family for seven centuries. The family also owned the nearby Château Lamothe, later renamed Château Margaux. The property was purchased in 1824 by M. de Vivens, and renamed Château Durfort-Vivens. It was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Today it is managed by the Lurton family, one of the famed modern names in Bordeaux.
Château Durfort-Vivens are one the pioneers of biodynamics in Bordeaux, applying this farming method across the entire vineyard area. Claire Villars-Lurton is the driving force behind this transition, reconnecting the estate with virtuous viticulture, reintegrating biodiversity while banishing the use of chemicals. In the winery Gonzugue Lurton and his team take a light touch to allow the wines fully express the Margaux terroir. The innovative use of terracotta amphora has been integrated with classic French oak maturation to produce wines of aromatic power and refined structure.
'Over the years, the quality of the wines of Château Durfort-Vivens will continue to gain in brilliance and precision.'

Lovely deep plum colour, this is very high Cabernet Sauvignon but this is an estate where they often goes high, (2021 vintage was even higher than this at 97%). Savoury, slim, floral, precise and vivid, salinity, grip, lovely sense of lift and grip. 3.75 pH. Harvest 23 September to 8 October. 37 hl/ha. 70% new oak, 30% in amphora.

The 2024 Durfort-Vivens is laced with dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, spice and mocha. It offers gorgeous texture and fine balance. The pliant, creamy mid-palate is especially appealing. The 2024 is naturally still coming together, but it is a striking, beautifully rendered wine.

A blend of 94.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Durfort Vivens exhibits aromas of cassis, dark berries, violet and spices. Medium to full-bodied, dense and structured, it's framed by a good chassis of tannins, with a lively mid-palate that segues into a somewhat austere, firm finish. Despite this compact aftertaste, this is a strong effort in the context of the vintage.

Very good, bright fruit with a floral edge to the red cherries and currants. A hint of paprika, white pepper and olives. Nicely balanced and structured, this has supple medium body and an extremely long finish. Juicy, pristine and firm. Lots of poise and beautiful fluidity. 94.5% cabernet sauvignon. From biodynamically grown grapes.
