Château La Clotte Grand cru classe, St-Emilion
Château La Clotte is a four-hectare Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé situated on a prime limestone plateau and south-facing clay slopes. The name derives from the Gascon word for grotto, referencing the ancient underground caves where the estate ages its wines. Since 2014, the Vauthier family of Château Ausone has directed the property, bringing the same technical rigour and precision to this small, historic vineyard.
Winemaker Pauline Vauthier employs gravity-flow reception, parcel-by-parcel vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, and manual punching down. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for up to eighteen months in French oak barrels.
The resulting blend is Merlot-dominant, with Cabernet Franc as a supporting variety. On the nose, it consistently reveals aromas of black cherries, plums, incense and dried flowers. The palate is medium to full-bodied, offering dark red fruit, silky tannins and a distinct limestone salinity on the finish.
