About this wine
CHATEAU LE BON PASTEUR, Pomerol
Château Le Bon Pasteur, with total vineyard holdings of 6.7 hectares, is a unique estate on the Right Bank in Bordeaux. It is located on the border between two world-famous regions: Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. As opposed to the great châteaux of the Médoc, the vineyard holdings are not in a single block, but instead they are spread out over 21 plots. This patchwork of terroirs accounts for the wine’s considerable complexity, deep colour and delicate bouquet, as well as a softness typical of Pomerol and a generous, powerful side reminiscent of Saint-Emilion.
The configuration of the estate vineyards is classic Pomerol, with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc planted on a combination of clay, sand and gravel soils. Each year the grapes are hand harvested before optical sorting post-destemming. Fermentation occurs in a combination of temperature-controlled small format stainless steel tanks and new French oak barrels. Upon the completion of fermentation the wine in tank is transferred to new French oak barrels where malolactic conversion takes place. The wines are then aged for 15 to 18 months, depending on the harvest conditions. The resulting wines are renowned for their purity and vibrancy, with a wonderful combination of opulence, elegance and ageability.

Rich with smoky flavors and tastes of wood aging, this wine is just starting out. The fruit is certainly there, lush black-plum flavors supported by a core of dense tannins. With its richness and potential, the wine needs time. Drink from 2025.

Showing even better from bottle than barrel, the 2018 Château Le Bon Pasteur is a sexy, opulent beauty that just begs to be drunk. Gorgeous black and blue fruits, white truffle, green tobacco, flowery incense, and damp earth give way to a full-bodied, textured, luscious Pomerol with ripe, velvety tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. Reminding me of the 2012,as well as a little of the 2009, this is a knockout 2018 to drink over the coming 20+ years.

The 2018 Bon Pasteur is absolutely gorgeous. Silky, nuanced and beautifully perfumed, 2018 is pure seduction. Sweet dark cherry, rose petal, lavender, mint, spice and a touch of new French oak are all laced together in a mid-weighty, silky Pomerol that is immensely charming right from the start. This bottle is shockingly different from the bottle I encountered just a few weeks ago, and far more satisfying.

Le Bon Pasteur 2018 has a deep garnet purple color. It bursts with warm black cherries, boysenberry preserves, and violets, plus hints of star anise and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fine-grained tannins with lovely freshness and a quiet intensity on the finish.

Blackberry, raspberry, violet and cedar on the nose. It’s full-bodied with vivid acidity. Savory and fleshy. Well structured with firm tannins. Aging will bring harmony. Blend of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Try after 2024.

Medium deep crimson. Intense liquorice blackberry confit. Chocolate Turkish delight, plum flavours, classic chocolaty textures and fresh long minerally acidity. A style that Australians will like and understand with the mid palate volume and richness of fruit.
