About this wine
Château Montrose 2me Cru Classé, Saint-Estèphe
Château Montrose is a second Grand Cru Classé estate in Saint-Estèphe and is considered one of the leading wine properties of the appellation. Located in the eastern half of the appellation just 800 metres from the Gironde estuary, the property’s proximity to the water provides a unique micro-climate that protects the vines from frost. The Grand Vin is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, that appears very powerful and austere in its youth, with a backbone of firm tannins that provides exceptional longevity.

Expert Review
Andrew Caillard MW
Deep colour. Fresh intense dark berry/plum/licorice with herb garden nuances. Beautifully balanced wine with creamy dark berry flavours, fine-grained, al dente tannins. Finishes very firm and muscular but lovely fruit density, volume and richness. 94-97 points, Langton's.

A strong effort, the 2011 Montrose exhibits a dense ruby/purple colour in addition to abundant blackcurrant and boysenberry fruit notes intermixed with white chocolate, damp earth, truffle and camphor. Medium to full-bodied with sweet tannin and impressive concentration, this blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot hit nearly 13% natural alcohol (relatively high in Bordeaux, but lower than the 13.2% in 2009 and 13.8% in 2010). The 2011 should drink well for 15 or more years. 91-93 points, The Wine Advocate (2013).

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Very dark, black core. Not very aromatic, touch of coffee and graphite. Powder fine and elegant tannins. Fresh, dry but finely layered, lots of very fine layers. Dry finesse and long too but needs lots of time. 17.5/20 points, jancisrobinson.com
