CHATEAU NENIN, Pomerol 2020 Bottle
About this wine
Château Nenin Pomerol
Owned by the Despujol family since 1847, Château Nenin in Pomerol was considered an underperformer before Jean-Hubert and Michel Delon from Château Léoville-Las Cases purchased the property from their cousins (by marriage) in 1997. In 1999, the Delons added 4 hectares of vines from Château Certain and in 2004 they renovated the Château and winery. These days the 32 hectares of vineyard are planted to 78% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon (down from 20% in the 1990s) producing a much-improved wine that has more depth and much finer tannins.

An estate that seems to have hit new heights as of late, the 2020 Château Nenin is another beautiful, ripe, yet balanced and elegant wine from this château. Ripe black cherries, hints of cassis, leafy herbs, chocolate, and earth all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with fine, integrated tannins and a great finish. I like it today, but this has two decades of prime drinking ahead of it.

The 2020 Nenin is a blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rolls effortlessly out of the glass with gregarious notions of baked black cherries, stewed plums, and boysenberry preserves, followed by hints of candied violets, licorice, and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate has nice, firm, rounded tannins and bright acidity to support the generous fruit, finishing long and perfumed.

The 2020 Nénin is compelling from bottle. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, spice, leather and incense give the 2020 tons of aromatic and flavor complexity. The 2020 offers a striking balance of textural richness and vibrancy. I very much admire the energy and overall class here.

A very fine yet structured Nenin with racy and linear tannins that run the length of the wine. Black chocolate and orange peel. Medium to full body. Chocolate. Very long. Tight and intense. Real structure to this. 68% merlot and 32% cabernet franc. Needs five or six years to open and come around.

Excellent quality, kicking off with graphite and slate, juicy blackberry and damson fruit, with plenty of luscious Pomerol signature, combined with the more serious, tannic face of Nenin. 40% new oak, 3.65ph. Harvest September 8 to 23. An upscore from En Primeur. 38hl/h yield. 3% amphora for ageing for the 1st time with 45% new oak.

Aromas of cherries, sweet berries, rose petals and orange rind introduce the 2020 Nenin, a medium to full-bodied, pure and lively wine with a deep core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish. This serious, age-worthy Pomerol illustrates this estate's upward trajectory.
