About this wine

Alter Ego, 2nd wine of Chateau Palmer

Alter Ego is not a second wine in the traditional sense, but rather a distinct, contemporary expression of Château Palmer. Introduced in 1998, it represents a deliberate shift in philosophy, creating a Margaux that prioritises immediate fruit purity and early accessibility whilst retaining the estate's signature elegance. The fruit is sourced from specific, biodynamically farmed vineyard parcels within the Palmer estate, where the gravelly terroir shapes its refined character.

In the cellar, winemaker Thomas Duroux and his team apply the same meticulous standards to Alter Ego as they do to the grand vin. The blend leans heavily on Merlot, balanced by Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled oak vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels. Crucially, the proportion of new oak is kept to a moderate twenty-five to forty per cent, ensuring the wood framing supports rather than dominates the natural profile.

The nose consistently offers vibrant aromas of blackcurrant, wild blackberry and fresh violet, often accompanied by subtle notes of cedar and liquorice. On the palate, it delivers a supple, fleshy core of dark fruit, framed by fine-grained tannins and a refreshing acidity. It balances richness with a precise, clean finish, making it a compelling, reliable choice for fine wine collectors seeking Margaux prestige without the decades-long wait.
