About this wine
Château Rayas Réserve Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Château Rayas Réserve is one of the Rhône’s most singular wines. Made entirely from Grenache, it comes from 10 hectares of north-facing vines grown on sandy soils—an unusual site within Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Reynaud family has worked this land for generations, and the approach remains resolutely traditional: hand harvesting, whole-bunch fermentation, no destemming, and ageing in old foudres. No new oak is used, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
Rayas is known for its aromatic lift and textural finesse. Each vintage shows red cherry, wild strawberry, garrigue and spice on the nose, with a supple, detailed palate and a long, savoury finish. It ages well but is never about weight—it’s about perfume, balance and quiet intensity. Production is small, and demand comes from collectors worldwide. Among Rhône wines, there is nothing quite like it. Rayas remains a benchmark for its style and consistency over time.

Vinous
The 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservé is at the start of its broad drinking window. Prominent kirsch liqueur, forest floor, strawberry compote, dried meat, rosemary, pressed violets and sage are only some of the many aromas and flavors that jump out of the glass. Refined to the core, the athletic 2012 packs a laser-like focus and flawlessly integrates the elevated alcohol. This is a remarkably uplifting Rayas with less obvious punch compared to riper years like 2009 or 2010, but the levels of intensity and finesse are jaw-dropping.

Decanter
There are yellow hints to the orange-pink colour. Totally classic Rayas aromatics, red-fruited in style with touches of mint to the strawberry and orange rind. Full-bodied, with generous alcohol, fine-sand tannins and good acidity. Underneath there are some herbal nuances and pine needles from the whole-bunch fermentation. An easy-going, relaxed, fairly potent vintage of Rayas that's ready now, and full of charm and interest.
