About this wine

Château Rieussec Carmes de Rieussec, Sauternes

Château Rieussec, one of Sauternes’ most respected estates, sits next to the famed Château d’Yquem in the heart of Bordeaux’s sweet wine country. The Carmes de Rieussec is the estate’s second wine, made with the same care and attention as the grand vin but with a focus on earlier approachability. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle adding complexity. Grapes affected by noble rot are hand-harvested in successive passes, then fermented and matured in French oak barrels.

Each vintage of Carmes de Rieussec offers generous aromas of honey, ripe stone fruit and citrus peel, underpinned by subtle spice and toasted notes from barrel ageing. The palate is rich yet balanced by fresh acidity, making it versatile when paired with food. While designed for earlier enjoyment, it has the structure to develop gracefully in the cellar, offering an authentic taste of Sauternes at exceptional value.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Chateau Rieussec
Since 1984 Château Rieussec has been the Sauternes property of the Rothschild family, owners of Chateau Lafite. Rieussec, a neighbour of Chateau d’Yquem, had for generations been a leading producer and was ranked Premier Cru in 1855. Even so, under Rothschild ownership the property has been transformed, with new cellars and winery and far more rigorous grape selection (plus greater use of barrel fermentation and maturation) for the flagship Grand Vin. This has led to Rieussec’s clear emergence as a rival to its famous neighbour. Chateau Rieussec is 90% Semillon, with minor contributions from Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The property is 110ha with 68ha under vine.
