About this wine
Château Séraphine, Pomerol
'A rising star in Pomerol'
Jane Anson, Decanter
Château Séraphine is the newest Pomerol estate on the block. Comprising a 2.2-hectare parcel of vines, purchased in 2017 by Martin Krajewski, it is a vision splendide albeit in a Lilliputian way. The property is run by Charlotte ‘Lolly’ Krajewski, a 30s something Plumpton winemaking graduate with tons of winemaking experience at Château des Sours in the Entre Deux Mers, Elephant Hill and Trinity Hill in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. She epitomises the ascendency of practical and highly motivated women in the world of wine. Energetic and articulate, she brings a down-to-earth highly skilled and experienced factor to her father’s magnificent yet tiny enterprise.

The 2020 Séraphine, partially aged in amphora, takes several minutes to come together in the glass. Whilst not a powerful bouquet in the context of the vintage, it coheres wonderfully and eventually offers blackberry, raspberry coulis, light truffle and violet scents. The palate, likewise, takes its time to coalesce, revealing vivid red fruit, truffle and touches of blue fruit towards the nicely structured finish. I feel this is a Pomerol determined to mature at its own leisurely pace, so don't feel rushed to broach this excellent Pomerol.

In just a few short years, the 2.2ha Séraphine has become an essential name in Pomerol, and it's delivering beautiful appellation character in 2020. Creamy damson and black cherry fruits, cocoa bean, spiced red pepper, cigar box and incense. Has settled in over ageing, with luscious tannins and plenty of grip, will improve further over the next few years in bottle. 40% new oak, with a small section in clay amphora. Winemaker Charlotte Krajewski.
