CHATEAU SIRAN, Margaux 2020 Bottle
About this wine
Château Siran, Margaux
Château Siran is known for its elegant, classically styled Bordeaux expressions. Vintage on vintage, the blend is slightly different, but you can expect merlot, cabernet sauvignon, perhaps a little cabernet franc and petit verdot, grown in alluvial sandy gravel and aged in a minimum of new oak. Sophisticated and focused, this wine speaks to the generational expertise of the winemakers– the property itself dates back to the 17th Century, and the Miailhe family have been at the helm for over 150 years.

This is seriously structured with blackcurrants, blueberries and iodine. It’s full yet so tight and focused with serious austerity and focus. Very classy and polished with precision. A terrific Siran. Try after 2026.

The 2020 Siran sees the reintroduction of the art series label. It offers black cherries and wild strawberry scents, cedar and pencil lead. Light marine scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, very nicely balanced, hints of white pepper and tobacco towards the classically-lined finish. Superb, even if tasting them alongside, I find a soupçon more complexity in the 2019 Siran.

The 2020 Siran is packed with the essence of blackberry jam, mocha, espresso, bittersweet chocolate, licorice and cloves. This dark, sumptuous Margaux is not at all subtle, but it does pack quite the punch. This is an especially opulent style, to be sure.

Showing the serious face of 2020, as you find across Margaux. Good quality, firm tannins, chewy and confident, sombre dark fruits, clear ageing potential, high eucalpyptus and mint character, liqourice root, pomegrante, cassis and blueberry. 35% new oak. Lots of red and blue fruits, spring flowers, graphite, and leafy tobacco notes all emerge from the 2020 Château Siran, a medium-bodied, elegant, incredibly pretty and finesse-driven Margaux. It shows the fresher, elegant style of the vintage and has remarkable purity, fine tannins, and a great finish.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Siran swans out with gregarious notions of black and red cherries, black raspberries, and mulberries, plus touches of dried lavender, unsmoked cigars, and juniper. The medium-bodied palate is alluringly plush and refreshing, with bags of perfumed red and black fruit and a soft-spoken yet lingering finish. While irresistible to drink now, this impressive beauty should age wonderfully (Siran usually does), so don't be afraid to hide away a few bottles for 25 years+.
