About this wine
Château Trotanoy, Pomerol
One of the most celebrated wines of Pomerol and Bordeaux, Château Trotanoy has been in the JP Moueix Stable (which includes amongst others La Fleur-Pétrus in Pomerol and Dominus in the Napa Valley) since 1953. It is perfectly situated on gravel and clay on the Pomerol plateau, not far from Pétrus, Trotanoy's 7.2ha is planted to 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. With naturally low yields, Trotanoy is one of Pomerol's most profound and concentrated wines needing at least a decade and usually longer to start hitting its straps.

Deep crimson. Wax polish, cedar, dark plum aromas with mineral notes. Inky deep and generous with plentiful dark plum, blackberry dark chocolate flavours, supple ripe tannins and noticeable cedar, roasted chestnut, vanilla spice oak notes. Finishes chocolaty with sesame notes. All in parts but should develop very well. 96% Merlot 4% Cabernet Franc

Floral and tensioned with precision that gives it incredible brightness. It’s dreamy and energetic with purity and serenity. Full-bodied yet structured and polished. Dynamic young wine. Merlot and cabernet franc blend.

The 2022 Trotanoy offers up rich aromas of blackberries, cherries, licorice and sweet spices, followed by a full-bodied, rich and tannic palate that's broad shouldered, powerful and concentrated. As ever, this is the most muscular, structured, robust wine in the Mouiex portfolio, a shorter than usual maceration notwithstanding, and it will require patience.

The character of the 2022 vintage gives Trotanoy a sweet damson edge that is fairly unusual, an approachability and sweetness to its tannic frame that I was unsure about at En Primeur but am seduced by now it's in bottle. Great quality, cassis, blackberry, graphite, crayon, black chocolate, cocoa bean, soy, umami, subdued power. 7.2ha lots of replanting right now so 100% Merlot, harvest September 1 to 19.

A big, muscular 2022 (which is what this château tends to produce), the 2022 Château Trotanoy is based on 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon that comes from an incredible terroir on the upper plateau in Pomerol. Black cherries, roasted herbs, graphite, iron, and hints of chocolate all define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, concentrated, structured mouthfeel, serious tannins, and outstanding length. It's legendary stuff, but it's not for the instant gratification crowd. It actually reminds me slightly of the 1998. Hide bottles for a decade if you can, and it will have 3-4 decades of overall longevity.

This has come through on its En Primeur promise of power, seduction and excitement. While it's still a little compact and tense, the detail has become more focussed and each element is presented with so much finesse. A dark and heady nose filled with blackcurrants and liquorice. Layered and firm, this has a well built structure - fine tannins support rich and dark fruit with spiced edges but underpinned by a fresh mint, cooling acidity that keeps it straight and focused. Intense but chiseled and delicately muscular. Such a captivating wine that will have a very long life.
