CHRIS RINGLAND Limit Lodge Cabernet Mataro, Barossa Valley 2017 Magnum
About this wine
Chris Ringland Limit Lodge Cabernet Mataro is a blend of exceptional fruit from exceptional vineyards, a new style from winemaker Chris Ringland and grape grower Adrian Hoffmann. The name ‘Limit Lodge’ comes from a historical parcel within the Hoffmann vineyards, and is also appropriate given the ‘limited’ number of bottles made.
Matured in aged French oak, this is a juicy Cabernet blend rich in dark, plummy fruits with savoury notes of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and anise. The finish is long with mouth-coating tannins, and a slight salinity. Plenty of potential for ageing.

Expert Review
Erin Larkin
This 2017 Limit Lodge Barossa Shiraz is the first release of this wine, with 100% American oak, matured for three and a half years. "This wine was a result of Adrian Hoffman suggesting a different approach, and it turned out to be a damned fine idea," Chris said. The fruit is from a vineyard selection (focus on raisins) with the purpose of filling American oak. This stares straight into the sun here—there are notes of malt, savory earth, iodine and sumac-rubbed meat. The oak is impactful in its lactone character, however it also works to acknowledge the historic Barossa Valley Shiraz style, which was traditionally matured in American oak. Sitting with Chris here today, overlooking the Flaxman Valley, the wines and their shape and style make a lot of sense.
