About this wine

Clonakilla Viognier, Canberra District

Clonakilla established its reputation on the granite soils of Murrumbateman, where the warm days and cool nights of the Canberra District provide an ideal climate for Northern Rhône varieties. While famed for blending the grape into its flagship red, the estate also crafts this dedicated white expression. It represents a benchmark for Australian variety, focusing on balance and varietal purity rather than sheer volume.

Winemaker Tim Kirk utilises large-format French oak barrels, specifically puncheons and demi-muids, for fermentation. This choice minimises wood flavour while allowing the wine to breathe. The wine rests on its lees for several months, a technique that builds texture and integration without the need for heavy handling.

Every vintage delivers consistent aromas of fresh apricot, citrus peel, and white ginger. The palate is defined by its stone fruit core, balanced by a fine, phenolic grip and a clean line of natural acidity. It offers a precise, medium-bodied finish that pairs reliably with Asian spice or rich poultry.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Clonakilla

Clonakilla

The story of Clonakilla is one of risk and ingenuity, of vision, generosity and faith.  Founded in 1971, Clonakilla grew from a small, struggling boutique winery in the marginal wine region of Murrumbateman to become an icon of ultra-fine Australian wine. Under the skilled winemaking of Chief Winemaker Tim Kirk, Clonakilla’s remarkable flagship wine, the Langton’s Classified ‘Exceptional’ Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier has risen to become a definitive example of its genre. Clonakilla also produces a number of superb whites including Riesling, Chardonnay and Viognier alongside its range of superbly crafted cool climate reds.
