About this wine

‘The Esplanade’ is the name of a single, north-facing block, overlooking the Woori Yallock Creek, in the Syme Vineyard at Gruyere in the lower Yarra Valley. The MV6 clone Pinot Noir vines, planted in 1998 in silty, clay-loam soil, produce a deeply-coloured wine with power, intensity and structure.

The Esplanade Pinot Noir is made traditionally in small open fermenters, and matures in French oak barriques and puncheons, usually 35% new, for nine months. Typically, the wine is complex and powerful with brooding characters of dark cherry and blueberry. Seamless French oak is complemented by elements of spice, earthiness and whole berry savouriness.

Vibrant characters of dark cherry and blueberry, whole berry savouriness and whole bunch spice carry through on to the palate with underlying French oak. The wine has great texture and finishes with chalky and persistent tannins. The Esplanade Pinot Noir will benefit if given time to evolve in the cellar.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Coldstream Hills
Noted Australian wine writer James Halliday and his wife Suzanne established Coldstream Hills in Victoria’s Yarra Valley in 1985. Halliday juggled his career as a lawyer in the early days. He could often be seen tending his vines at godforsaken hours to squeeze in his workload. The winery is now part of the Treasury Wine Estates portfolio. Winemaking is led by the highly credentialed Andrew Fleming. Over the years, Fleming has upheld Coldstream Hills’ reputation for producing top notch single vineyard and reserve wines primarily from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
