About this wine
Craggy Range Te Muna Road Vineyard Martinborough Pinot Noir
Craggy Range is blazing a trail in the New Zealand wine industry, and these two new releases are an excellent opportunity to discover why.
The Pinot hails from Te Muna Road vineyard, seven kilometres from the township of Martinborough, and grown in ancient, stony soils. The fruit is handpicked from the higher terrace of the vineyard. Fermented under indigenous yeasts with using partial whole bunch (around 15%) in a combination of French oak cuves and open-top stainless steel tanks.

Made from 17 to 20-year-old vines. About 25% whole-bunch. Robust pinot noir with floral, violet, plum, dark cherry, and a subtle savoury edge. Accessible now, although the wine should develop well, especially in the medium-term.
96 points, Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review.

Fancy feeling, yep. Kicks off with cherry juice, dried fruit, ground nuts, some mahogany and sweet herbs in the mix of scents. The palate is sinewy in a good sense, excellent in length, all satiny and long. Lots of flavour in a leaner, refined coil of flavour with a lot going on. Really fine, excellent and reserved expression. One for big glasses.
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.

There's a sense of richness here, caressing the midpalate, but always remaining elegant. It fills the mouth with a silken core of dense blue and red fruit. Savory tannin provides a corset that hugs the fleshy middle, while a thread of acidity and (30%) whole-bunch-derived line and spice keep this wine going from start to finish. A background note of oak-derived vanillins doesn’t get in the way of the pure blueberry, violets and pine needles.

Plenty of spice and modern-leaning, reductive complexity here, as well as bright red cherries, blueberries, cassis and violets. The palate has a fleshy, supple and attractively fresh red-cherry and blueberry core. Mouth-filling, flavorful and vividly fresh at the finish. Drink over the next six years.
93 points, James Suckling.
