About this wine
DOMAINE BELLE Cuvee Louis Belle, Crozes-Hermitage
Cuvée Louis Belle is named for the viticulturist father of Albert Belle, to whom Louis handed on the vineyards in the 1970s. The wine is 100% Syrah (Shiraz) from organically-farmed vineyards in the communes of Larnage and Crozes-Hermitage growing on clay and limestone soils and normally yielding just 30 hl/ha. Viticultural practices include close pruning and leaf thinning to improve bunch-exposure to sunlight. The grapes are harvested by hand, partially destemmed and vinified using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats with daily pumping over and punching down.
A final warm maceration follows the four-week fermentation. The wine is then matured in oak barrels (15% new, the remainder equally one, two and three years old) for 18 months. The wine typically shows aromas of fruit liqueurs, cocoa bean, black fruit and sweet spices. Secondary characters may include tobacco, peat, vanilla, cloves and coffee. The palate is rich and juicy, yet also elegant, with velvety tannins and a persistent finish. With age, black fruit and sweet spice characters become more evident.

Ned Goodwin MW
An upper tier, modern cuvée from this producer. Saturated dark fruits. Coffee grind oak, new and slathered with mocha. A bit too concentrated for its own good, but will win over South Australian drinkers to this more aromatic, febrile Northern Rhône idiom.
90 points, Ned Goodwin, Master of Wine (March 2023)

Opaque violet. Smoky, spice-accented aromas of cherry, black raspberry and singed plum, with hints of licorice and cracked pepper. Broad and pliant in texture, offering dark berry and violet pastille flavors, along with hints of licorice and smoked meat. Finishes spicy and long, with a repeating berry note and rounded tannins adding subtle grip.

Beautiful cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as bouquet garni, flowers, and a hint of bacon fat emerge from the 2019 Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Louis Belle. This is another gorgeous, impeccably made, balanced wine from this team that's well worth your time and money. This cuvée spends 18 months in just 15% new French oak, with the balance in 1- to 3-year-old barrels.
