About this wine
Domaine de l'Aurage, Côtes de Castillon
L’Aurage is a Merlot from the Côtes de Castillon. Bordering Saint-Émilion, this region represents an incredible value proposition for Bordeaux. Opulent and seductive, the wine is deep crimson in the glass. A beguiling sweet, peppery nose meets a palate rich with aromatics. You’ll taste red fruit, sweet cherries, and pudding spice, all wrapped up with silky mouthfeel and rounded texture.
Those with a passion for Bordeaux are likely to know the name ‘Mitjaville’. The family owns two other renowned Bordeaux Château–Tertre-Roteboeuf Saint-Émilion and Roc de Cambes in the Côtes de Bourgin. Current patriarch Louis Mitjaville inherited his title from father François, who launched his career when his wife inherited Tertre-Roteboeuf in the 1970s.

The 2020 L'Aurage has an intense bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, almost pastille-like scents that are very pure, though it takes two or three minutes to coalesce in the glass. The palate is ripe on the entry with lively red fruit, a pinch of white pepper and sage, beautifully structured, while the oak has assimilated nicely during its barrel maturation. This grows on you with each sip and comes recommended.

I was pretty much blown away by the quality of the 2020 Domaine De L'Aurage, and this is one serious Castillon that readers should jump on if given the chance. Offering a brilliant nose of ripe currants, black cherry liqueur, sweet tobacco, and spicy oak, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and beautiful tannins. An absolutely stunning wine, as well as the finest wine I've tasted from this estate, it will evolve for 15 years or more.

A rich, flamboyant wine, the 2020 Domaine de l'Aurage bursts with aromas of plums, berries, licorice and spices framed by toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, it's velvety and layered, with powdery structuring tannins and an expensive finish.
