About this wine

Domaine de Montille Le Cailleret 1er Cru, Puligny-Montrachet

‘Le Cailleret’ is a plot of Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru situated in the north of the prestigious Montrachet above the Premier Cru ‘Les Maidens’. ‘Le Cailleret’ refers to the stony soils on the hillside plot where the vines were planted in 1993.

The quality ‘Le Cailleret’ is such that it is occasionally (perhaps generously) described as Grand Cru-like. However, it’s more appropriate to think of this wine in terms of the Premier Cru spectrum where it sits near the top.

The fruit is hand-picked, then pressed before being allowed to settle prior to fermentation takes place in 600L and 228L barrels. Only a slight amount of new oak is used and is adjusted for the vintage but never more than a quarter. After about a year the wine is racked off into stainless steel to maintain freshness.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Domaine de Montille
Domaine de Montille is a top Côte de Beaune domaine renowned for producing some of the purest, most elegant and harmonious expressions of Pinot Noir to be found in Burgundy. Established in Volnay in 1951 by Hubert de Montille, the majority of production was sold in bulk to négociants for many years. Over time the domaine acquired additional parcels in Volnay and Pommard with more recent purchases in Corton, Beaune and Vosne Romanee. Today the domaine is run by Hubert’s son Etienne, who adheres to a traditional winemaking philosophy. Built to age, the wines take at least five years to begin showing their full potential.
