Decanter
From vines planted in 1905 producing only 12 hectolitres per hectare this year. Exquisite fruit with great aromatic intensity and purity, quintessential Pinot. Beautifully textured attack, ripe and spicy despite the absence of new oak. A taut, intense acidity lends amazing verve and flair. Very long and structured, with a long life ahead.

Tasting note: A kaleidoscopically spicy and subtly floral nose is even more discreet if patently classier with its lovely aromas of red and dark cherry liqueur, lilac, tea and softly anise-tinged aromas. The sweet, pure and understated flavors are underpinned by firm and dense but quite fine tannins that support the mouth coating, indeed palate staining finish that is impeccably well-balanced and sneaky long. There is ample sap to buffer the structure and unlike many of these grands crus, this should actually be approachable young. In sum, this is a magnificent CSD.

Like the Clos de la Roche the ultra-fresh nose displays a curious hint of menthol on the spicy array of red currant, tea, lavender, violet and plenty of earth character. The dense, palate coating and once again sleekly muscular medium-bodied flavors are blessed with a seemingly endless reserve of tannin-buffering dry extract that imparts a sappy mouth feel to the massively long finish. The old vines are really in evidence and this regal effort should effortlessly age for years yet be approachable after only 10.

This stunning effort possesses arguably the most complex nose of the range as it combines a beautiful array of spice, floral, dark berry, plum and gentle earth elements. The impressively rich, serious, mouth coating and broad-shouldered flavors possess superb volume and a taut muscularity on the sensationally persistent and explosive finish. This is a genuinely remarkable wine of class and grace that should also age for years though unlike some of the Ponsot 2013s, be approachable sooner.

Domaine Ponsot is rich in history. It was one of the very first domaines in Burgundy to bottle its own wines (in the 1870s) and to begin selling wines under its own label (in the 1930s).
Clonal selection of pinot noir also began here. Ponsot provided the ‘mother plants’ from ancient Clos de la Roche vines for the first approved Burgundy clones – all of the so-called Dijon clones were taken from Ponsot cuttings in the Clos de la Roche.
Ponsot has fabulous holdings including perfectly situated parcels of very old vines (100+ years) in Clos St Denis and Clos de la Roche, where Ponsot is the largest land owner with 3.4ha – some three-quarters of the original vineyard.
There are smaller holdings in Chambertin, Griotte Chambertin, Chapelle Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Charmes Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, Corton, Corton Bressandes, Corton Charlemagne, le Montrachet, Chambolle Musigny 1er cru Les Charmes, and Morey 1er cru Clos de la Monts Luisants (white and red). There is also some Bourgogne rouge and superb village wines from Morey, Gevrey and Chambolle.
