EDOUARD DELAUNAY Pommard Champonnieres 1er Cru 2019 Bottle
About this wine
Edouard Delaunay Pommard Champonnieres 1er Cru
The revival of Edouard Delaunay under Laurent Delaunay has restored this historic house to the top tier of Burgundy. This 1er Cru originates from ‘Les Chaponnières’, a parcel situated immediately below the famed Les Rugiens. The site is known for its iron-rich brown limestone soils, which consistently produce wines of significant power and structural integrity, characteristic of the finest Pommard appellations.
Winemaking focuses on precision and the preservation of terroir. The fruit undergoes a cold pre-fermentation maceration to extract colour and aromatics without harshness. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled oak vats, followed by 15 months of maturation in French oak barrels, with approximately 40% of the barrels new. This approach ensures the oak supports rather than masks the natural intensity of the Pinot Noir fruit.
On the nose, the wine delivers concentrated aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, and liquorice, complemented by subtle notes of forest floor. The palate is robust and well-defined, featuring a dense core of red fruit and firm, muscular tannins. It possesses a saline minerality and a long, structured finish, suggesting excellent cellaring potential for the Australian collector.
