ELIO SANDRI Perno, Barolo DOCG 2017 Bottle
About this wine
Elio Sandi Perno, Barolo DOCG
Elio Sandri produces this Barolo from the Perno cru, a steep hillside vineyard in Monforte d’Alba. The site features old vines rooted in Helvetian soils of sandstone and grey marl, which contribute to the wine's characteristic power. The Sandri family has farmed this land for generations, maintaining a traditional approach that prioritises vineyard health over high production volumes. This wine serves as a direct expression of one of the most rugged and respected sub-zones in the region.
Winemaking remains strictly traditional. Elio Sandri utilises long macerations of up to thirty days in concrete vats with no added yeasts. The wine then matures for at least three years in large Slavonian oak casks. Sandri avoids small barriques and new oak to ensure the Nebbiolo grape and the Perno terroir remain the focus. The wine is bottled without filtration, preserving its natural texture and structural complexity.
The nose delivers aromas of dried roses, leather and anise. On the palate, the wine is full and firm, showing flavours of dark cherry, tar and iron. Dense tannins provide a substantial frame that ensures longevity. The finish is dry and savoury. This Barolo offers Australian collectors an authentic, unmanipulated wine that rewards patience. It is a prestigious choice for those who value the classic, resolute style of Monforte d’Alba.
