ESCARPMENT VINEYARD Pinot Noir, Martinborough 2023 Bottle
About this wine
Escarpment Vineyard Pinot Noir, Martinborough
Escarpment Vineyard represents the definitive expression of Martinborough’s unique alluvial gravels. Founded on the principle of site-specific winemaking, the estate draws fruit from established vines across the Te Muna Road terrace. This region, often compared to Burgundy for its cool climate and limestone influence, produces Pinot Noir with structural integrity and a distinct sense of place.
Winemaker Tim Bourne oversees a traditional approach in the cellar. The fruit is fermented with indigenous yeasts and a portion of whole bunches to introduce complex savoury notes. Maturation takes place in French oak barriques for 11 months, ensuring the tannins are polished without masking the fruit. The focus remains on balance and clarity rather than heavy extraction.
The nose delivers aromas of black cherry, dried herbs, and earthy spice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and focused, featuring flavours of dark plum and forest floor supported by fine-grained tannins. It offers a long, clean finish that highlights the natural acidity of the Martinborough region.
