Fattoria Poggio di Sotto, Rosso di Montalcino DOC

Fattoria Poggio di Sotto produces this Rosso di Montalcino from estate vineyards located on the steep slopes of Castelnuovo dell’Abate. The vines grow in soils composed of volcanic rock and marl at altitudes reaching 450 metres. These sites benefit from sea breezes and high diurnal temperature shifts, which promote steady ripening and acid retention. The estate treats its Rosso with the same viticultural rigour as its Brunello, sourcing fruit from the same high-quality parcels.

The winemaking follows a traditional, non-interventionist philosophy. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in wooden vats using indigenous yeasts, with long maceration periods to ensure stable extraction. The wine matures for twenty-four months in large Slavonian oak casks. This extended ageing period is significantly longer than the regional requirement for Rosso di Montalcino. It allows the Sangiovese to develop structural complexity and refinement while avoiding the influence of new oak flavours.

The nose offers scents of red cherry, raspberry and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and vibrant, featuring flavours of wild strawberry, spice and iron.
