FONSECA'S Vintage Port, Oporto

Fonseca’s Vintage Port is drawn from the house’s three classic Douro estates and foot-trodden in granite lagares before two years’ maturation in seasoned oak, then bottled unfiltered for long life in the cellar. The wine shows dense dark fruit in the Fonseca mould, with blackberry, blackcurrant, spice, coffee and cocoa notes wrapped in thick, velvety tannin that promise decades of development. Long recognised as one of the benchmark Vintage Port houses, Fonseca’s declared vintages regularly attract mid-90s scores from leading critics, offering Australian collectors a serious yet fairly priced addition to a fine-wine cellar, particularly alongside chocolate or hard cheese at the end of a meal.
